The Brief
50 Songs of the Sea is a 20-minute immersive experience conceived by artist Es Devlin and commissioned by Zara to mark the brand’s 50th anniversary. Housed in a custom-built dome atop Mount San Pedro in A Coruña, the piece is both a tribute to the local community and a celebration of the company’s origins in the city.
Auditoria were engaged to deliver a spatial audio system and show control infrastructure that could support daily public performances of the experience, alongside occasional live events and press activity. The brief called for complete system integration within a technically challenging dome structure, and a highly automated solution to support onsite staff operation.
The Challenge
The Atlantic Dome Observatory, a former water tank repurposed as an observatory, presented a unique set of acoustic and technical constraints. The 28-metre dome would house a seated audience arranged in five concentric rings, with several of those platforms rotating to support the immersive nature of the show.
The dome’s shape made acoustics particularly complex. Curved surfaces create focused reflections, resulting in an exaggerated echo effect at the centre of the space, something that would be distracting for spoken word, spatial sound, and general intelligibility. Any audio solution would need to address this directly, while remaining entirely concealed behind the fabric projection surface.
Our Approach
Auditoria designed the spatial sound system from the ground up, working closely with Es Devlin Studio, LarMac, Polyphonia (music and sound design content), VYV (video systems), WonderWorks (technical production) and others to ensure full integration with the visual, kinetic and architectural elements of the piece.
The first step was to manage the acoustic behaviour of the dome. We introduced a full lining of sound-absorbing material across the interior to break up reflections, then added a doughnut-shaped reflector, suspended invisibly above the projection line, to return energy to the space in a more controlled and natural way.
System design was carefully modelled in Treble, EASE and Soundvision to optimise coverage, preserve clarity across all audience positions, and minimise acoustic hotspots. Every loudspeaker and subsystem was designed to be hidden from view, and had to work within a dense array of projection surfaces, structural framework and rotating platforms.
To support the rotating audience layout and film narrative, we used L-Acoustics L-ISA tools to spatially map the soundtrack in Pro Tools. The show was pre-rendered and played back via a dual-redundant QLab system, with remote control and monitoring handled through a custom Q-SYS touchscreen interface. This setup also included control of venue power, allowing operators to manage all systems, including projector energy use, through a single interface.

The Results
The result is a rich, immersive sound environment that supports and elevates the narrative content of the piece. Visitors are guided by sound as much as by image, with spatial cues subtly directing attention across the dome.
The system is reliable, responsive and flexible, with intuitive day-to-day controls and no need for technical intervention between shows. Everything functions from a single interface, from playback and rotation cues to microphone routing and end-of-day shutdown.
Feedback from the client and creative team has been overwhelmingly positive, and the system has operated without issue since opening in July.
