The Brief

Auditoria were engaged by David Atkins Enterprises to design the audio systems for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2011 Pan Arab Games, staged at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha.

The ceremonies formed the centrepiece of the Games, bringing together performance, music and large-scale visual elements in front of a full stadium audience and an international broadcast. The audio system needed to support both the atmosphere in the venue and the demands of a broadcast-driven production.

The project built on a number of previous large ceremony productions delivered in stadium environments.

The Challenge

As with many large ceremony productions, the main challenge was designing a system capable of covering a large stadium environment while supporting the timing and coordination required for a live broadcast event.

The system also needed to integrate closely with replay and show control infrastructure so that music, sound effects and time-critical cues could be delivered reliably throughout the performance.

Our Approach

The stadium sound system was built around L-Acoustics KUDO line arrays, providing reinforcement across the seating bowl and supporting the central performance area on the field of play.

DiGiCo consoles formed the primary control platform for the show, with signal distribution handled through an Optocore network. Lake processors were used for loudspeaker system management and control.

The ceremony soundtrack and playback requirements were delivered using Pyramix replay systems, supporting synchronised show control and music playback throughout the production.

The Results

The ceremonies were delivered successfully at Khalifa International Stadium, supporting both the live stadium audience and broadcast production.

The system provided reliable coverage across the venue and integrated smoothly with the wider show control infrastructure, enabling the performance elements, music and visual production to operate in sync throughout the event.

The project formed part of a continuing series of large-scale ceremony productions delivered across the region during this period.
