The Brief
When Q-Dance brought the iconic Defqon.1 festival from Europe to Australia, they chose the Sydney International Regatta Centre as its new home. As the first event of its kind on this site, organisers needed to navigate strict planning regulations while maintaining the energy and sound intensity the festival is famous for.
Auditoria were brought on board to develop a comprehensive sound management strategy that would enable the festival to deliver the powerful audio experience fans expected, without exceeding noise thresholds in surrounding residential areas.
The Challenge
Balancing the demands of a high-output music festival with surrounding community impact is always complex, but Defqon.1 presented unique challenges:
- The site’s proximity to residential zones
- High audience expectations for loud, immersive sound
- Multiple large-scale stages operating simultaneously
- Variable sound sources beyond music, including helicopters and amusement rides
- The need for real-time monitoring and responsive complaint handling
Our job was to create a detailed plan that accounted for all of these variables while ensuring compliance with local council regulations and building long-term trust with the community.
Our Approach
Our work began with acoustic modelling of the site and surrounding areas, informed by the council’s permissible noise limits. We used this data to advise on optimal stage positioning and orientation to minimise sound spill while preserving coverage and clarity within the festival grounds.
In collaboration with Q-Dance, we developed a tailored noise management plan for submission as part of the development application. This included:
- Predicted off-site noise levels
- Stage output recommendations
- Identification of sensitive receiver locations
- Community notification strategy
- On-site SPL logging and remote monitoring
Each year, we refined and updated this strategy to account for new technologies, site adjustments, and evolving community expectations.

Additional Source Management
- Oversight of helicopter rides, mechanical attractions and mobile stages
- Level management and staggered stage closures to control exit crowd noise
- On-site engineers available to adjust output as required throughout the event
The Results
The Defqon.1 Music Festival successfully ran for nearly a decade at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, becoming a flagship event for Q-Dance in the region. Thanks to our ongoing involvement, the festival maintained its audio identity without overstepping its environmental boundaries.
Our approach not only ensured compliance but also fostered a respectful relationship with the local community, enabling the event to return year after year with strong support from the council and stakeholders.
