The Brief
Auditoria were engaged to provide audio design and music editing for the 2025 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. This year’s production, The Heroes Who Made Us, marked the 75th anniversary of the Tattoo, bringing with it heightened expectations for an event already renowned worldwide for its artistry, precision, and spectacular setting.
Our brief was to deliver natural reinforcement of the live acoustic performance on the Esplanade, while ensuring sufficient power and bandwidth for the contemporary music featured in the show. Every seat needed to offer an equally compelling experience, with precise localisation and timing to match the unique movement and choreography of the massed bands.
The Challenge
Edinburgh Castle’s Esplanade is an extraordinary stage and one of the most challenging. With over 8,000 audience members surrounding three sides of the performance area, and hundreds of musicians constantly on the move, timing and localisation are in constant flux. The design must adapt to a sound source that never stays still.
The outdoor nature of the venue adds further complexity. Systems must be weather-resistant, with control kept indoors, meaning the mixing process relies on nearfield monitoring for the mix engineer and close collaboration with the sound designer and music team who are the ears in the arena. Space and sightlines are also tightly controlled, leaving little room for ground-stacked systems. Any technical intervention must complement the heritage of the site and the meticulous visual staging.
Our Approach
Now in our third year supporting the Tattoo, Auditoria worked closely with the creative team, led by Creative Director Alan Lane in his debut year, and the musical leadership of Nick Grace and Tom Hodge. Early conversations with the music team shaped a key creative decision for 2025, which was expanding the Stage Band into a Stage Orchestra with a larger string section and a total of thirty musicians.
From a technical perspective, we refined the loudspeaker configuration introduced in 2023, further smoothing coverage across the grandstands. For 2025, an additional element was added to each North and South grandstand array, providing greater consistency of level and tonal balance to the rear seats. A visual impact test during 2024 rehearsals reassured stakeholders that the change would not compromise sightlines, allowing us to proceed with confidence.
Workflow was another key improvement this year. Both FOH and Monitor consoles were upgraded with the DiGiCo Theatre licence, streamlining programming across the complex session files. Music editing was handled in-house to ensure seamless playback, and TiMax SoundHub processors were used for localisation and timing, with every musician’s movement carefully programmed to align reinforcement with acoustic sound.
Technical Highlights:
Audio Design
Loudspeaker system: L-Acoustics KIVA II arrays with SB15m subs, complemented by 5XT and A10 Wide fills, plus additional K2 arrays for Gatehouse localisation.
RF microphones: Over 70 channels of Shure Axient Digital wireless microphones.
Music editing and playback: Custom editing and optimisation of playback material, integrated into a QLab workflow.
Control systems: Dual-engine DiGiCo Quantum 7-T consoles (one at FOH and one at Monitors), TiMax SoundHub processors, Optocore and AVB redundant signal distribution.
The Results
The 75th anniversary Tattoo was a celebration of heritage and innovation. The audio design reinforced the unique acoustic power of the massed bands while handling the demands of contemporary music with clarity and depth. Audience members across the arena experienced consistent, full-spectrum audio coverage, from the front rows through to the back of the grandstands.
A rich line-up of international performers, including the Top Secret Drum Corps, the United States Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, and the Orchestra of the Naval Forces of Ukraine, showcased the global reach of the Tattoo, supported by a sound design that brought every detail into focus.
